Falcons Girls to Represent Australia

A big congratualtaions goes out to Sophie Paine, Jaimee-Lee Morrow, and Monique Stojanovic for being selected to represent Australia in the Junior team in the upcoming Arafura Games in Darwin.

The Arafura Games is a leading international sporting competition for emerging champions of the Asia-Pacific and beyond.

Since 1991, Arafura Games has been held every two years in the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, Darwin. Unlike other Games, Arafura Games is not designed for current world beaters or Olympic champions, instead it provides a high quality stepping stone for athletes as part of their journey to compete at the highest level.

Arafura Games 2009 has an exciting line up of events across 27 sporting disciplines. For the first time at Arafura Games will include the sports of Darts and Muaythai.

After the success of the inclusion of Oceania Paralympic Championships in Arafura Games 2007, Arafura Games 2009 will again host Paralympic Events in eight sports.

The Northern Territory looks forward to welcoming sporting neighbours from around the world to the forthcoming Arafura Games 2009.

Well done girls! We are wishing you the best of luck for the competition!

2009 FIVB Rule Changes

Well there have recently been a number of changes to the rules made by FIVB and we will experience these changes in the 2009 State League season.

The rule changes are as follows:

  • Players may now touch the opponent’s court with any part of their body above the feet, provided they do not interfere with play, i.e. the foot/feet must still be in contact with or directly above the centre line.
  • Player contact with the net outside of the antenna is now the same as touching the ropes, post or other objects, i.e. it is permitted as long as it does not interfere with play
  • Contact with the net is no longer a fault unless it interferes with play. The rule book contains definitions of ‘interfering with play’which I suggest you read. The main one to note, is that contact with the top band of the net and the top 80cm of the antenna during the action of playing the ball is always considered to be interference
  • Substitution procedure. The actual request for substitution is the entrance of the player in the sub zone. The scorer acknowledges the sub by pressing the buzzer and the 2nd refere authorises with the whistle. The second referee stands between the post and the scorer, i.e. the 2nd referee no longer goes to the attack line to control the sub.
  • There can now be 2 liberos per team. The coach must designate one as the ‘acting’libero and one as the ‘reserve’. The coach can change the libero at any time during the match, but can only do so once. Once the ‘acting’libero has been replaced, they can no longer partake in the game. If the ‘reserve’libero is then injured, the coach can only use one of his/her players on the bench at the time of the injury as a replacement libero (which is the existing rule for replacing the Libero). Since VVL is not an FIVB World Competition, the maximum number of players (including Liberos) per team is still 12 (at FIVB World Level, the Liberos can be extra).
  • Both the 1st and 2nd referee can now call illegal back court blocks and attacks.

What are your thoughts on these changes?
